Cinderella: Red Carpet Premiere
Magic was in the air on March first when Disney premiered its most recent live-action film, Cinderella. This take on the classic animated film and story was shown at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood almost two weeks before its worldwide March 13 release date. In this version, Ella, as the title character is called, is played by Lily James, while Richard Madden plays her Prince Charming. Cate Blanchett serves as the film’s antagonist, playing the role of Ella’s stepmother Lady Tremaine. Rounding out the cast are Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger as Ella’s wicked stepsisters Drizella and Anastasia and Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother.
Much of the movie is focused on fashion. Sandy Powell, a costume designer with three Oscars to her name, created some amazing outfits for the cast. While there may not have been any glass slippers on the red carpet, the stars of Cinderella certainly looked their best.
As the star of the movie, everyone was wondering what Lily James would wear to the premiere. She didn’t disappoint—her Elie Saab gown looked like it had been created from magic. The long, ice blue gown featured delicate embroidery, netting, and a train. She paired it with a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps that fit perfectly with the dress and carried a clutch with a timepiece on it, a nod to her character’s need to be home by midnight.
Richard Madden looked every bit the prince in his black suit. His classic look included black pants, a black suit jacket, and a simple white tuxedo shirt. He added a black skinny tie to complete the look. He was accompanied by his girlfriend and Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman, who chose a pale yellow sleeveless gown for the premiere.
The Evil Stepmother looked anything but evil: Cate Blanchett went with a more understated look than her character, wearing a plain white long-sleeved top and a black pencil skirt. Her large pendant got plenty of attention, however.
Kenneth Branagh, director of the film, walked the red carpet in a black suit. It looked similar to a black tuxedo jacket with peak lapels, a classic jacket with a simple single button that belongs in every man’s wardrobe.
Karen Gillan turned heads with her Burberry trench coat. Reviews seem to have been mixed, with some loving the coat and the Louis Vuitton heels she paired it with, while others felt that it was a little too short and not quite formal enough for the premiere.
August Maturo, one of the young actors on the TV show Girl Meets World, showed that he already has a great sense of style. His white jacket with black details looked very similar to a classic, stylish white dinner jacket with black lapels. He wore it over a plain white button up shirt and, to keep it a little on the casual side, a pair of dark blue jeans. Fellow young actor Miles Brown followed suit, wearing jeans with his black suit jacket.
James, Madden, Blanchett, and the rest of the cast definitely wowed everyone with their red carpet outfits, and from early reviews, it appears the film is positioned to do the same. We’ll see come March 13.
