The Golden Globes is always a prime time for male celebrities to sincerely present a certain level of class to their public persona. Recent ceremonies have shown various trends in male attire, most notable being the transition from long ties to bow ties. This, of course, means that men’s formal wear is back, but with a slightly more modern take.
An evolution of fashion has brought to light a number of alterations to modern black tie standards. This “interpretation of formal” comes to life in a slimmer and trimmer fit; one that hugs a gentleman’s legs and ribs. There is also a sense of minimalism in the realm of modern formal, which can be seen in notch lapel tuxedos sporting two buttons in front, slimmed lapels and an overall shortening of one’s coat length.
Finally, contemporary wear may also completely neglect the use of an evening waistcoat or cummerbund. This particular trend stems from the use of fitted shirts surrounding the waist. Since most male celebrities may be pressured to remain thin and cut, it remains in their best interest to follow the trending guidelines listed above.
This year’s Golden Globes featured many tasteful and minimally progressive takes on formal wear for men. Leonardo DiCaprio sported the classic simplicity that undoubtedly honors the standards of black tie formal, but his modern take can be found in his coat, which presents as a two button notch lapel. DiCaprio’s thin build is also complemented by his slim fit tuxedo.

Aziz Ansari kicked it up a notch in the contemporary department as he sported a body hugging black coat with a mere single button. Ansari’s long, satin peak lapels and black studs truly shine without gravitating away from any classical standard.

Some celebrities decided to take an untraditionally formal route, which is risky, but can certainly be pulled off depending upon the man in question. The first thing anyone noticed when watching Daniel Craig stroll onto the red carpet was his trendy-looking pair of sunglasses. But this in no way overshadows this James Bond star's stylish midnight blue tuxedo, accompanied by black satin peak lapels and a black bow tie. On the outside of Craig’s tuxedo trousers ran a subtle dark stripe running vertically from pocket to cuff.
An even more refreshing get-up was that of Robert Downey Jr.’s. Sporting an all-corduroy black coat, RDJ truly knows how to combine fun and formal. RDJ manages to pull off this untraditional look with a two button front, patterned bow tie, and thick, black studs.

If we are to take anything away from the male fashion trend found in this year’s Golden Globes, it is that tradition is key, but nothing is set in stone. Many men may doubt their ability to balance a youthful aura and a vintage standard, but in order to sincerely progress, a gentleman must not neglect the value of black tie tradition.
