On Sunday, August 24, 2013 MTV brought its annual celebration of musical artists and performers back to Brooklyn at the Barclays Center. The Video Music Awards (more commonly referred to as the VMA's) was a smashing success. 2013 was a spectacular and sensational year for artists across all genres and platforms. A big year for the 30th anniversary of the VMAs, including an exciting redesign of their iconic moonman by none other than innovative artist KAWS. This year, at an event typically run by dazzling divas with an army of glitter and gusto, it seemed that men dominated. Somewhere past all the raunchy, provocative, and sizzling, show stopping performances stood three very significant men who managed to stand out of the highly competitive crowd with an incredible amount of class and an impeccable amount of style.
After a stunning season of success for Robin Thicke's latest summer single "Blurred Lines," the artist himself performed everyone's favorite hit (with the show stopping Miley Cyrus) rocking a bold and brilliant getup fashioned entirely out of black and white stripes. But on the red carpet he was ever the classy gentleman, sporting a most traditional pairing of formal wear: a black, slim fit tuxedo complete with satin lapels. He wore no tie, but instead chose to keep the evening casual with a clever smile and a loosely buttoned white tuxedo shirt as he stood proudly next to his beautiful wife and best accessory, Paula Patton.
Another dashing source of inspiration comes from none other than Dapper Darren himself. Darren Criss, although not up for a moonman award or an outrageous performer himself, was a happy guest. He showed off his signature formal style on the red carpet in true gentleman form. With his trademark grin and boyish looks, he stood confidently in a colorful tuxedo. Even in a tremendous shade of plum, Darren managed to win the hearts of everyone around him. Paired with a black tuxedo shirt and a necktie that was an interesting blend of dreamy blues and purples, Darren Criss shows the modern man that, when done in the proper fashion, a dash of color can be just what your attire needs.
Finally, after being off the musical map for quite some time now, we have the man of the hour himself. Justin Timberlake truly did more than just "Take Back the Night," he stole the entire show. Decked in a dashing black ensemble and stunning white oxford shoes with shining toe caps, Justin sang a brilliant mashup of 9 of his most famous singles from over the years. He sang another 3 while sharing a brief reunion with his former boy band,'N Sync, causing the entire center to cheer even louder. Justin won 4 moonman trophies including top honors of Video of the Year for "Mirrors" along with the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, a high honor reserved for musicians who have had a profound and unforgettable effect on the MTV culture. There was no doubt in anyone's mind, the VMA's belonged to Justin.
