Formal wear for men made a big splash this past week at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Sponsored and voted on by the actual actors union, the honors are distributed to various performances from a singular performer to an ensemble honoring the best in TV and film. While the special events had its fair share of memorable moments from fashion faux pas to hilarious speeches, men’s formal wear made bold trends from the red carpet all the way through the ceremony.
This particular extravaganza is considered less glamorous compared to its more luxurious counterparts like the Academy Awards and Golden Globes. Despite this setback, Sunday’s red carpet coverage kicked off strong with Justin Timberlake. The former boy band member and current social media maven made an entrance wearing a wool-and-linen blend check in brown and fawn suit, accentuated by a pocket square. Defying the traditional standard of pairing a black tuxedo with a tie, Timberlake’s bold choice is a great example of taking a risk and pulling it off. Bolder and brighter can backfire based on the combination. With the red carpet, a muted tone matches the scenery well.

While Timberlake ruled the red carpet, another notable male celebrity set the bar even higher during the ceremony. The legendary TV star Dick Van Dyke received the lifetime achievement award, gaining honor for a career that has spanned nearly over eight decades. As he strode up to the podium, the 70-year old proved that personality and attitude are all someone needs to enhance their suit. The actor’s tuxedo was very simple but his witty speech and charisma made him stand out. With a slightly larger bow tie and a more form fitting tuxedo jacket, Dick Van Dyke made it clear that age is irrelevant when it comes to style.
While these two stood out from the crowd, the other guild members in attendance did not really catch our attention except for one particular group, including typical formal wear icons like Jon Hamm and Bradley Cooper. The ever stunning Cooper, of course, wowed us again with his one button shawl lapel tuxedo. Argo won best ensemble in a motion picture for their film about the Iran hostage crisis. Comprised of the three women leads and the rest of their male counterparts, the cast accepted the award with everyone in matching coordinating efforts.
Ultimately, the 2013 awards season so far has been setting a new standard for men’s formal wear. The next segment of the gold rush is the Grammy’s which we can witness on Sunday, Feb 10th, and ultimately, the Oscar’s which will show live on Sunday, Feb. 24th. We can’t wait to see the stars parade their fabulous gowns and tux’s again. Stay tuned to this blog for more celebrity formal wear updates!
